Today I got to drive a pickup through hilly fields of cows (who wouldn’t budge without excessive honking) and haul several truckloads of scrap metal and old barbed wire fencing I’d removed from the farm to the dump, which meant driving lots of miles on country roads in the Virginia Blue Ridge. Also it snowed. It was really pretty great.
During a conversation about loneliness, a friend reminded me why we have friends in the first place. She said that we’re all like cups of tea (I prefer coffee, so when I think of this analogy, I think of my Starbucks eggnog latte which is amazing and everyone should try it) but I digress.
We are all like cups of coffee and when we’re by ourselves, we don’t feel lonely because we have our coffee for physical and emotional sustenance.
However, when our cups get empty, we have only to look to our friends for attention, love, and support and our cups are magically full again. We are then ready to take on the world by ourselves.
I am slowly learning the difference between loneliness and solitude. When I am alone, I am not really lonely, for I have friends that love and care about me even though they may be far away.
